Pomeroy is the county seat of and only incorporated city in Garfield County, with a population of 1,415 people in the city, and a total of 2,250 for the county (  With a labor force of 1020, Garfield County has a lower than state average unemployment rate, and a median household income of $44,600. The county's largest employers are the Federal Government through the US Forest Service, the county, the school district, the hospital district and Dye Seed Ranch, Inc.  Garfield County is served by 2 regional airports, Walla Walla and Nez Perce County in Lewiston, Idaho, and is situated along US Highway 12, with access to I-90 and I-84.  Bordered on the north by the Snake River and the south by the scenic Blue Mountains and the Umatilla National Forest, Pomeroy and Garfield County boast year-round recreation opportunities, scenic forest and rangelands, and quiet rural living.
Historically an agricultural community, Pomeroy has a strong farm and family heritage, with most downtown businesses occupying buildings dating to the very early 1900's.  The buildings are part of the Pomeroy Downtown Historic Registry, recognized by the National Register of Historic Places and Washington State's Historic Registry. As well, Pomeroy is home to 4 museums, the Garfield County Museum, the Lewis & Clark Exhibition Hall, the Eastern Washington Agricultural Museum, and the Historic Pataha Flour Mill. Residents of Pomeroy project their civic pride through volunteerism to numerous civic groups and organizations, including Spinner's Community Organization, Pomeroy Community Center, Pomeroy Super Senior Citizens, a PEO chapter, Garfield County Hospital Auxiliary (HUGS), various 4-H clubs, garden clubs, Pioneer Association, Pomeroy Gun Club, Blue Mountain Artisans Guild, volunteer firefighters, Pomeroy Chamber of Commerce, and numerous church-affiliated groups.
